e-Commerce Terms and Definitions

  • Broadband. A type of permanent WWW Connection that provide access to or the transmission of Data, Voice over IP, Video, Video on Demand, Teleconferencing, Television signals, Telephone, and Internet. Usually considered to be a service offering speeds of 100 Kbs or greater. A service to the WWW that can be provide by copper wire, fiber optic cable, microwave signal, wireless radio signal or satellite signal.
  • e-Commerce. The promotion and sales of products and services on the world wide web.
  • ISP. Internet Service Provider. The organization that supplies web site servers for web pages or dial up or broadband connections to computer users who want to access the Internet.
  • Open Source Code. A software system written with code in a programing language that any qualified programer can access, understand and modify without permission as opposed to proprietary source code which is assembled in such away that the operating code cannot be accessed except by the author of the code.
  • Page Rank. The score of your web site applied to it by individual search engines that roughly and arbitrarily measures four criteria. The value of you site as an information resource. The organization of the subject matter; the ease of navigation; and the quality of a web site. The number of links pointing to your web site from the world wide web. The traffic that your site receives from the search engine evaluating it. Also called 'Web Rank'.
  • Payment Gateway. An almost indispensable feature of online commerce. The payment gateway company provides the merchant with online licence and certificate that verifies to the consumer that the merchant is legitimate and that the merchant's licence is current and valid! A payment gateway is a connection to a secure, Internet service like 'Verisign', 'Thwaite', and others, that allow a merchant who has an established account with both the payment gateway provider and a credit card company, to offer immediate, online processing and approval of a shopper's purchase when using a credit card. The third party provider of the 'payment gateway is able to immediately access, in real time, the records of major credit card companies to get approval, or not, for online purchases. Purchaser's credit card information is sent over the internet for authorization using the purchaser's 128 -bit cipher strength Internet browser encryption so that eves droppers cannot see the credit card information being transferred to the payment gateway. The merchant must have a credit card merchant account with each individual credit card company in addition to an account with the payment gateway service provider. Some other third party companies offer merchants without established merchant accounts, the use of their own merchant accounts and payment gateway service for a commission on each sale plus a monthly service fee.
  • Search Engine. A web site and software system used to organize web page information in such a way as to allow one to search by keyword, phrase or by subject.
  • Search Engine Optimization. The manipulation and organization of text and graphics of a web site or individual web page to cause the search engines to give higher page rank or positioning on search engine search results pages.
  • Server. A computer connected to the internet that hosts web sites. Usually with large capacity hard drives and Internet connections to allow large numbers of users to access web sites at the same time.
  • Shopping Cart. A software system that drives an e-commerce web site, usually incorporating an online database, that organizes product information, pricing, shipping costs, taxes and individual orders for a viewer, customer. A Shopping cart allows one to choose one product, leave it in the order que and continue to view other items before finally checking out. A shopping cart allows one to view orders and quantities, total costs, make item and quantity additions or deletions and then use a credit card to make an online purchase. Shopping carts are used for business to business and business to consumer. Larger sites incorporate site wide search engines to help shoppers find products.
  • Shopping Cart Software. Software that drives a shopping cart and database. One can either purchase the software for use on their own or rented servers or rent the software that is owned by a proprietary provider. Software ranges from simple to incredibility complex allowing small and large retailers to manage the marketing of their products online. Software comes in two basic formats. Open source and proprietary source code.
